Address formatting

Definition:

Address formatting describes the consistent storage and correct layout of address data in the database.

Address formatting ensures that outbound mail or packages can be sorted and labeled correctly. Storing addresses correctly and consistently in any kind of database offers numerous rewards such as:

  • Improved ability to discover and fix errors
  • Straighforward deduplication routines
  • More accurate data analysis

Traditionally, address formatting has been performed through back-end processes which attempt to fix broken addresses already residing in the database. Unfortunately, back-end address cleaning alone cannot provide continuous 100% address data accuracy.

A more innovative and successful approach is to format, verify and standardize addresses at the point of data entry into the database. By verifying addresses as they enter the system, front-end data cleaning software proves to be much more effective in areas such as address formatting, verification and standardization.
