What is an address verification service?

Validating mailing addresses involves making sure that an address describes a real place and is formatted correctly. Doing this by hand takes a long time and leaves a lot of room for human errors. An address verification service automates the validation process. You get accurate, clean address lists without spending time checking and updating each address manually.

For example, Experian’s address verification tools use Delivery Point Validation (DPV®) to help you get the most up-to-date address information for your contacts. This means our program automatically validates addresses right down to the subunit. You can be sure your deliveries make it to the intended address the first time. Successful deliveries cut out costs from undeliverable mail or outdated address information.

How does an address verification system work?

Experian’s address validation system works by checking addresses against postal data from over 240 countries. An address in the United States, for example, is checked using the most recent USPS® data. Our system scans the address for incorrect formatting, mismatched city and postal code data, and spelling errors. Any errors are fixed, so the address comes back clean and ready for your next package delivery, marketing flyer, or informational letter.

Our validation tools easily fit into any organization:

  • Works with your favorite CRM or ERP
  • Choose a preferred address format
  • Get domestic and international address verification to reach customers worldwide
  • Add real-time verification with Experian’s address validation API
  • Apply for mailing discounts by using our CASS™-certified solution

Our address verification tools

At Experian, we know how valuable time is at your organization. You can’t spend hours checking each address on your list, but you don’t want to lose time and money resending undeliverable mail. Our address verification tools make it easy to get the updated, accurate addresses you need while letting you focus on other business needs.

Experian’s validation tools include:

  • Real-time address validation: Get accurate address data immediately. Check an address using our verification tool or add our verification API to verify addresses as they’re entered. The advanced API works in most technical applications so you can prevent inaccurate addresses from ever entering your database.
  • Batch address verification: Have an address list that needs to be checked for accuracy? Experian’s bulk address verification service lets you upload and validate an existing address list. Our system checks each address on the list and returns it to you clean, correct, and ready for you to start mailing.
  • International address validation: Are your customers spread around the world? There’s no problem with international address validation from Experian. With access to postal data from over 240 countries, we can make sure your addresses are correct—whether a customer is down the street or from further afield.
  • NCOA database: People move a lot, so it can be difficult to keep up with address changes. The good news is that many people file their new address with USPS® using a change of address form. Experian uses National Change of Address (NCOA) processing to validate the names and addresses of the people on your mailing list. You’ll have the most recent address, even when a customer moves.
